Tool Use

Level 2

Short Description

The capability of an AI model to call external functions, APIs, or services to gather information or take actions.

Friendly Description: Tool use is when an AI doesn't just talk, it actually picks up other software tools to get things done. Instead of guessing the answer, the AI can use a calculator, search the web, query a database, or send an email. It's the difference between a friend who tells you what they think the weather is and one who actually pulls out their phone to check.

Example: Ask an AI assistant, "What's our team's revenue this quarter, and email a summary to my manager?" With tool use, it can query your sales database, calculate the numbers, draft a clear summary, and send the email, all in one smooth flow.
