SOTA (State of the Art)

Level 3

Short Description

The current best published performance on a given task or benchmark.

Friendly Description: SOTA, short for "state of the art," is just shorthand for "the best result anyone has achieved so far" on a particular task. It's a moving target, what was SOTA last year may be old news today. Researchers love to chase SOTA scores because it's a clear sign that the field is moving forward.

Example: When a paper announces a new model that's "SOTA on translation between Spanish and Japanese," it means that model now scores higher on the standard benchmark for that task than any previously published one. A few months later, someone else may push past it and claim the new SOTA.
